Cupping

Cupping is a technique that utilizes negative pressure (suction) to release stagnant/stuck blood and fluid from tissue and bring it to the surface to be carried out through the circulation and lymphatic systems. This allows new oxygenated blood to flow into the area and bring nutrients to the area to promote healing. It is performed by placing silicone cups on a selected area of the body while creating a vacuum seal on the skin. This creates the pulling effect of drawing fluids to the surface.

With cupping there is a possibility of redness and/or discoloration from the release and clearing of toxins and stagnation that may occur and can last from several hours to several weeks in some cases and in relation to after-care activities. This reaction is not bruising, but due to cellular debris, pathogenic factors and toxins being drawn to the surface cleared away by the circulatory system. The body's immune system can temporarily react to this release as it might with flu-producing flu-like effects like nausea and headaches, that will subside in time with rest and water.

Cupping SHOULD NOT be combined with aggressive exfoliation, 4 hours after shaving, sunbathing, sunburn, or when hungry or thirsty. Since cupping opens up the pores, making the skin sensitive to hot and cold, exposure should be avoided to cold, wet and/or windy conditions, hot showers, baths, saunas, hot tubs, and aggressive exercise for 4-6 hours.

Exposures to such extremes can produce undesirable effects and such situations should be avoided.
